Many articles and literature highlight the fact that donors donate to solve social problems but as non profits do we put forward an ambitious and bright future that the donor and NGO can together strive for or we resort to myopic views of this is what we need for our programs.

In reality, 80% of NGO website hardly talk about the cause and a bright future that the NGO is striving to achieve on its front face. It’s more about bragging how big an NGO is rather than how important their mission is. NGOs/charities need to present a compelling statement of the change that it wants to see in the world within a stipulated time and give an opportunity to donors to join in the way the donors can.

It means that your present pressing needs and programs should be linked to the mission of the organisation and donors should be able to follow the logical sequence that leads from your vision and mission to the program that they can fund. Here are three pointers to achieve this:

  1. Work out the equation whether continuing your current course would lead to the achievement of your mission within the set timeline. If not, a course correction is highly suggested.
  2. If your current project is in the same direction as of your mission, put logical and feasible timeline for your mission and the program. The program could be a multi-year program but putting a timeline to it would help to set a course.

For e.g. One good mission could be – Cover 1000 Hectares of arid land in Nairobi Desert with indigenous plant.

  1. Is your mission ambitious enough and is your impact rewarding enough? Answering to these questions would help you understand whether your mission sounds like – a rallying call for war or a May day call for help- to the donors

And, your cause, your mission and your program should come out beautifully on your website. You can now get your webiste independently rated by our team of social experts whhich would inclued suggestions on optimising and getting it Donor Ready.
